Maintenance Duties
The Secondary Road Department maintains nearly 1100 miles of roads. Approximately 200 miles of the system is hard surfaced (PCC, Asphalt, Seal Coat), and the remaining miles either have a granular or earth surface. The department is also responsible for all structures and approved objects within the road right-of-way, including thousands of drainage structures that cross and parallel these roads. There are 226 bridges over twenty feet long in Clayton County. The department, in general, provides snow removal, drainage maintenance, granular road blading, roadside management, and bridge maintenance.
Engineering and Construction Duties
The Engineer's Office carries out the design, inspection, and contract administration of the secondary road projects. Types of projects include, but are not limited to, road resurfacing, road reconstruction, bridge rehabilitation, and bridge replacements. The department provides an annual budget and a five-year construction program that identifies how the county will be spending its funding on county roads.
Weed Commissioner and Roadside Vegetation
The Weed Commissioner is appointed annually by the Board of Supervisors. The Weed Commissioner position is to remind property owners of the need to eradicate noxious weeds growing on their property and, if no action is taken by the landowner, cause such action to occur and bill the costs back to the landowner. This position is also responsible for the eradication of noxious weeds in county road right of way and the care of other vegetation growing in the right of way.
