Duties and Responsibilities
The Clayton County Sheriff is an elected official serving a four-year term and acts as the chief law enforcement officer of the county. In partnership with the Clayton County Attorney, the Sheriff is responsible for enforcing state laws, preserving public order, and ensuring the safety of all citizens. The Sheriff also oversees the Clayton County Jail and is responsible for the secure and humane custody of all individuals under county jurisdiction.
Primary Duties Include:
- Law Enforcement Collaboration: Work cooperatively with municipal, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to promote public safety and uphold the rule of law.
- Jail Administration: Serve as custodian of the Clayton County Jail, maintaining responsibility for all inmates until they are lawfully discharged.
- Execution of Legal Processes: Execute and return all writs, warrants, summonses, and other legal documents issued by the courts and lawful authorities.
- County Patrol: Patrol county roads and rural areas to deter criminal activity, assist motorists, and ensure a visible law enforcement presence throughout Clayton County.
- Peacekeeping Authority: Act as the principal peace officer of Clayton County, maintaining public order and ensuring the enforcement of all applicable laws.
- Jury Summons: Summon and assist in the selection and service of grand and petit jurors as required by the courts.
- Transportation of Individuals: Safely transport convicted individuals to correctional institutions and, upon lawful commitment, convey patients to state hospitals or other designated facilities.
